About us
At the forefront of dementia and mental health support services
Three quarters of a million people have dementia in the UK and the numbers are steadily rising. It mainly affects older people and the chances of developing it increase significantly with age. It affects one in five people over the age of 80 and one in 20 people over the age of 65.
In view of these harsh statistics Housing 21 is particularly proud to be the only housing association that has a specialist department providing expertise in meeting the needs of older people with dementia. This enables us to provide services for older people with dementia and their carers plus consultancy, training and research on person-centred dementia services for providers and commissioners.
A key part of this department is our dementia services advisor who provides advice, specialist training and consultancy to all our sheltered and extra care housing managers and to our care staff to enable people to be supported at home.
In addition it is estimated that 40% of older people who attend GP surgeries, 50% of general hospital patients and 60% of care home residents have mental health needs, and 12-15% of people over 65 have depression. Housing 21 are developing partnerships with Primary Care Trusts to use our extra care buildings to support the "Everybody's Business" agenda aiming to offer integrated services for older adults with mental health problems.
