Older people in the Beacon Lough area of Gateshead will formally have access to a full range of housing and community services after the official opening of Callendar Court on Friday 13 April. The newly refurbished tower block, developed through a partnership with Housing 21, the older people's housing association, and Gateshead Metropolitan Council, will provide 40 new homes in an extra care scheme for older people able to live in their own homes but who need additional care and support. Callendar Court will also have a range of additional facilities for use by residents and people living locally. This includes a restaurant, a hairdressers and a shop.
Lorraine Morrissey, commissioning manager for Housing 21, said: "We're delighted to have been part of such an exciting project which has now come to fruition. We hope that residents, and other local people, will enjoy all that Callendar Court has to offer." Gateshead Mayor Councillor Maureen Goldsworthy will formally open the scheme on 13 April. She said: "The combination of good quality housing, good community facilities and decent care makes Callendar Court a great community resource for older people, their families and neighbours."ENDS Notes to editors:
