Better homes, active lives in Kent

Kent County Council has appointed Housing 21 as preferred bidder to provide housing and care services across 13 sites in the county in a PFI deal worth £72 million over 30 years.

Better Homes, Active Lives will provide a range of housing for older people, people with learning disabilities and people with mental health conditions, including the design and build of 340 new apartments. The project is a partnership between Kent County Council and district/borough councils in Kent and Housing 21. In addition Housing 21 for the first time is working with other specialist housing and care providers - Golden Lane HA and MCCH - to support our work with people with learning disabilities and mental health issues.

In announcing the first stage of the agreement, Kent Council Cabinet Member for Adult Services, Kevin Lynes said: "I have visited a Housing 21 development in south-east London and I was delighted to see for myself the superb quality and sheer comfort of the apartments. It was fascinating to see how effectively people were supported while still able to remain active and independent."

Tayo Bilewu, director of new business and development at Housing 21, said: "We're delighted to have been chosen by Kent County Council to take the lead on such a prestigious project. The Better Homes, Active Lives initiative will give us the opportunity to create new, high quality and much needed living options for people in Kent."
